FAQs
Who is welcome to shop at the market and have meals at the Local?
Everyone! Community participation in our programs means that the Local remains a welcoming space. Everyone’s presence is important to us.
We do not pass along operating costs or mark up for profit. If shopping in our Community Access Market saves you money, you are welcome to donate those savings to The Local to help keep the market viable for all in the community. If you shop at our Market, please consider setting up a monthly donation!
Together we increase purchase power, passing along more savings to everyone.
Often people would like to donate to support The Local but do not have the available funds. Shopping in our market may free up funds that can then be used to support the programs we all benefit from.
What community meal programs do you offer?
We currently serve up to 200 people every Monday and Friday, providing nourishing meals and community connection as part of our Food Access Program. Throughout the rest of the week, our kitchen and staff are focused on:
- Preparing food for these meals
- Running cooking and gardening programs that build skills and confidence
- Supporting community members through workshops and programs that promote empowerment and advocacy
We take a multi-pronged approach to food insecurity — providing food, skills, and opportunities for personal growth — so each area receives focused time and resources.
How can I register my child for the kids’ program?
Our children’s cooking programs run in six-week sessions, with separate groups for:
- Ages 8–10
- Ages 11–13
These programs are very popular and often fill up quickly. Registration is managed through Eventbrite so please follow The Local CFC on that platform to be notified as soon as registrations open. Also, following us on Facebook and Instagram will let you know when new sessions are announced.
Can I donate items such as food, furniture, or other things?
We’re so grateful for your generosity! Donors like you make our work possible.
If you have something you’d like to donate:
- Food donations: Contact markets@thelocalcfc.org to confirm whether your donation meets our food safety and program requirements.
- Other items (furniture, equipment, etc.): Contact admin@thelocalcfc.org to see if your donation can be put to good use.
We try not to accept items we can’t use right away to stay focused on our mission and ensure every donation is directed to the place it is most needed and most effective.
I’d like to volunteer — how do I sign up?
That’s wonderful — thank you!
Please reach out to our Volunteer Engagement Facilitator, volunteers@thelocalcfc.org. They will review your availability and interests and help you find a volunteer role that fits well with our programs and needs.
How can I rent your space for my event or gathering?
Our building is regularly used for programs and community partnerships, and we rarely have the time, space, or staff to facilitate private event rentals. We focus our facility use on activities that directly support food security, learning, and community development — the heart of our mission.
Do you offer a lunch program for seniors?
We offer many seniors programs throughout the year that align with new grants and financial support.
Previously, the Seniors’ Lunch was funded through Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, which was required to cover staffing and food costs. In 2022, we did not receive this funding as the program’s focus no longer aligned with what we were offering.
Do you cater events?
We partner with local non-profits throughout the year to make good food available at community events that align with our mission. Beyond those partnerships, we don’t provide catering for private or external events because our chefs focus their time and skills on preparing food for our community meals and teaching cooking skills through our programs.
How do I get an allotment garden plot?
We’ve recently revised and streamlined our allotment garden delegation process. The best way to inquire is to contact our Administrative Assistant, at admin@thelocalcfc.org. They can let you know if any plots are still available or add your name to the waiting list for future openings.
What’s the best way to get in touch with your team?
The best way to reach us is to leave a voicemail or send an email.
