The Local Community Food Centre is a new not-for-profit committed to increasing access to fresh and healthy food for those in our community who are vulnerable to food insecurity. Our holistic approach includes programs that increase knowledge and skills and builds community around food, through programming dedicated to education in gardening and cooking.
Our location at 612 Erie St. in Stratford (the former “Country Depot” and previous site of the Stratford Farm Co-op) provides us with ample space for creating community gardens – both indoors and out! We are working towards a plan to create movable raised/elevated garden beds that can be used in both the exterior backyard space and the on-site greenhouse for our educational and demonstration purposes.
We are currently recruiting people to participate in our “Community Garden Advisory Committee” with the intention of garnering advice from community members who are knowledgeable or interested in the following areas:
- Greenhouse design, planning and maintenance
- Landscape design and raised/elevated bed design and construction
- Garden planning and maintenance
- Organic gardening practices
- Community gardens/greenhouse volunteering
The first meeting of The Local Community Food Centre’s Community Garden Advisory Committee will be Tuesday, April 3, 2012, from 5:30-6:30 pm in our greenhouse at 612 Erie St.
If you are interested in participating in our Community Garden Advisory Committee (or if you’d just like to attend this meeting to see if you are in fact interested!) please e mail info(at)thelocalcfc.org to confirm your attendance.
