POSITION:                       Assistant Community Chef

POSITION DETAILS:  Part Time – 30 hours a week @ 22.75/hr (+5% in lieu of benefits)

This is a one-year contract position with a possibility of extension or being made permanent.

This position will work under the supervision of the Lead Community Chef at the Local Community Food Centre in the delivery of Community Meals and Food Skills Programs.  Although this is a support role the candidate will be assigned responsibility for key elements of program delivery.  The position requires the ability to take direction and follow through on assigned tasks, to effectively work with and give leadership to volunteer teams and from time to time provide leadership to elements of program delivery. All staff working in the Kitchen are responsible for ensuring a high standard of cleanliness, health and safety and maintenance in the kitchen and food handling.  Other duties may include assisting with special events and programs as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The ideal candidate is passionate about good food—and wants to contribute to ensuring that everyone has access to it.  They have an understanding of the power of food and the many positive impacts it can have from supporting the health and social wellbeing of our community members, to building social ties, to supporting local farmers.  The assistant community chef will have excellent kitchen skills, be versatile and flexible to take on many different tasks, possess leadership skills with volunteers and program participants, and be able to effectively support the Lead Community Chef by contributing to an organized, positive environment in the kitchen as you work together with a diverse team of volunteers and community members.

  • 3 years experience with large scale food preparation and kitchen management
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prepare healthy, delicious meals for up to 150 people
  • Safe Food Handling certificate essential
  • Diploma/degree in a related field of study preferred (culinary or nutrition)
  • Experience working with volunteers and community members
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities using a strengths-based approach, showing sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination
  • Ability to work in a kitchen environment – including heavy lifting and carrying, extended periods of standing, repetitive movements in food preparation
  • Experience working or volunteering in a community based organization an asset


Implement menu plan, and oversee production and delivery of a minimum of one community meal:

  • Carry out plan provided by the Lead Community Chef.
  • Pull all ingredients.
  • Direct and lead volunteers on preparation of the meal.
  • Ensure meal is portioned and presented to meet the number of community members attending meal.
  • Oversee cleaning to ensure all areas always meet Health and Safety standards.
  • Manage leftovers and food storage efficiently and according to Health and Safety standards.

Prepare meals for distribution through The Connection Centre.

  • In consultation with Lead Community Chef, prepare hearty soups and stews for Connection Centre with a view to managing leftovers and culling for inventory management.
  • Support and oversee a team of volunteers to prepare these meals.

Oversee groups and programs as directed:

  • Develop programs for kids, adults and seniors in consultation with Lead Community Chef
  • Ensure that program delivery meets impact goals.
  • Suggest constructive development and changes to continuously improve curriculum content.
  • Provide leadership to participants throughout the program and effectively manage interpersonal dynamics of participants and volunteers.

Support Special Events and Programs as needed:

  • Carry out assigned tasks within the scope of budget and time provided for the event.

In all areas provide excellent volunteer management:

  • Guide volunteers in safe food handling, and high standards of health, safety and cleanliness practices in the kitchen.
  • Ensure volunteers work according to the needs of the meal plan and program goals.

In all areas maintain Safe Food Handling and Health and Safety Measures:

  • Contribute to kitchen maintenance of equipment and resources as needed in consultation with Lead Community Chef
  • Maintain kitchen at a high standard of health, safety and cleanliness.
  • Work with Kitchen skills Facilitator to ensure maintenance of equipment and resources in the kitchen.

Participate as The Local Community Food Centre Team Member:

  • Support other program staff and events as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings; trainings; agency functions as appropriate.
  • Role model professional behavior and positive communication with participants, volunteers and partners
  • Promote culture of health and safety within our space.
  • Adhere to all LCFC and CFCC policies
