The Event

On Monday, March 4th, The Local Community Food Centre, an affiliate of Community Food Centres Canada, will be hosting  an interactive webinar with Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. He will be presenting the results of his mission to Canada (May 2012) to people gathered in communities across the country including The Stop CFC in Toronto and The Table CFC in Perth. Mr. De Schutter will present his report to the UN Council on Human Rights in Geneva earlier in the day.

The Local Community Food Centre will livestream Mr. De Schutter’s report in our community dining room at 612 Erie St. in Stratford from 12pm-1:30pm, with a discussion to follow. This event is free and open for all to attend.

In May of last year, Toronto’s The Stop Community Food Centre hosted Mr. De Schutter during his mission to Canada, giving him an opportunity to hear directly from community members about their inability to access food.

The Local Community Food Centre in Stratford seeks to build locally on the success of The Stop in defending and fulfilling the right to food among low income community members.  The Local Community Food Centre’s Director Steve Stacey affirms:

“The members of the United Nations – including Canada – have recognized the right to physical and economic access to adequate food as a basic and universal human right. The finding that this basic human right is not being equitably realized among Canadian citizens, including people in our community, is a wake-up call for all of us… if we are truly committed to the vision of Canada as a socially just country then the UN Rapporteur’s findings will represent an urgent call to action The first step is getting together to accept and recognize these findings and to talk about how we can collaborate to change this unacceptable reality.”
