The Local Community Food Centre uses food and food access as a tool for community development in Stratford, Ontario. The Local CFC runs an urban agriculture program on site in its community gardens and greenhouse. We are looking for an individual coordinate our Urban Agriculture activities in maintaining the gardens and greenhouse, involving members of the community (volunteers, program participants, vulnerable adults, seniors, children and youths) and delivering educational programming.

Position: Community Garden and Greenhouse Coordinator

1 position – 30 Hours per week @ $12/hr.




Coordinate the Urban Agriculture activities at The Local Community Food Centre in the following tasks:

  • Supporting volunteers and program participants in garden maintenance tasks (prepping, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, etc.).
  • Coordinating distribution of garden-fresh produce for the volunteers and program participants’ personal use.
  • Additional garden maintenance as needed.
  • Working with kitchen programs to supply garden-fresh ingredients for meals and classes.
  • Helping to provide a weekly pizza-making session at an outdoor bake oven in the gardens.
  • Support volunteers in compost sessions and maintaining compost activities.
  • Conducting garden tours for visitors (individuals and groups)
  • Organizing special community events, field trips and workshops
  • Designing and facilitating garden-based education activities with children and youth during pizza bake evenings and afterschool programs.
  • Promoting the garden project with neighbours, program participants, potential volunteers and other members of the community.


  • Experience in organic gardening (through farming experience, paid employment or volunteer work)
  • Participation in post-secondary education program in agricultural studies, environmental studies, or food related studies.
  • Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
  • Experience working with volunteers and community members in a leadership capacity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with multi-tasking in a busy environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and show sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds)

Salary: $12 per hour
