We’re 1!

Dining Room Storehouse

On November 5, 2012, The Local Community Food Centre served its first Monday night community meal. It was not quite as we had planned – the renovations to the kitchen and dining room had taken longer than expected so… we served dinner to 120 people in The Storehouse warehouse space!

On November 22, 2012, with our renovations finally done, we opened our doors to the whole community for our proper launch – with a ribbon cutting ceremony and of course a great meal! It was so great to see all of the people who had helped bring this project to life – including the folks from Community Food Centres Canada – here to celebrate the opening of our amazing new space. And the Town Hall style discussion about the Do The Math challenge that followed dinner was incredibly powerful and motivating.

The food centre was built for the community and belongs to the community.

In the year since we opened we’ve served hundreds of delicious, healthy meals…

Uwe Sharon and Linda Salad

hosted a lot of cooking sessions…

and gardening sessions…

distributed thousands of pounds of fresh produce through The Storehouse…

and mobilized many people to challenge social injustice through our community action programs.

But by far the best thing that has happened is the community building that we’ve witnessed – all the friendships and connections we’ve seen happen here demonstrate the true power of food!
