It’s been a long and (at times complicated!) process, but we are now fully underway with our renovations as we transform what was formerly the Stratford Farmers Co-op/Country Depot at 612 Erie Street into The Local Community Food Centre!
Our design team has put together a really fantastic plan for a community kitchen and dining room that will be suitable for education as well as for cooking and serving drop-in meals. Our Food Distribution Centre coordinator Matt Kutney is managing the installation of walk-in coolers and outfitting the warehouse so we’ll be ready to connect our area’s food banks, community meals, student nutrition programs, and not-for-profits with lots of healthy (and as much as possible fresh and local!) food. And our Food Skills Coordinator Liz Mountain has been working with a team of unbelievably committed and talented volunteers to construct our community gardens (a big thanks has to go to the Rotary Charitable Foundation for giving us the funds we needed to build our backyard veggie paradise – keep posted for an official garden launch event soon!).
It’s amazing to see the dream becoming a reality before our eyes! We plan to open in September, but we’re already getting started on some garden-based programs with community members. Next week we’ll give a full update on the gardens and programs. For now, please enjoy this video we made way back in February with me explaining our exciting plans for what was then a completely blank slate!
