Here are some of the volunteer roles available at the Local:
Volunteer Kitchen Assistants
Do you enjoy cooking? Join our kitchen team to help prepare meals for our community. No experience required. Learn some new skills and enjoy the comradery of cooking together.
- Basic knife skills with ability to safely peel and chop vegetables.
- Must be able to stand for periods at a time.
- Willing to learn and/or mentor.
- Able to work as part of a team.
- Able to follow instructions.
- Must be able to present proof of COVID vaccination including booster.
We are currently looking for people to help during the following times:
- Mondays 10 AM – 1 PM
- Tuesdays 10 AM – 1 PM
Market Assistants
We’re looking for volunteers to help with the set up, operation and tear down of our Friday Access Market. This is a fun opportunity to help on one of our busiest days. Times are flexible starting from 10:00 AM to 1:30.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs (such as a sac of potatoes)
- Be able to follow directions
Our Mobile Access Market is up and running again. We’re looking for volunteers to help with the load in and out of our St Mary’s market. Market days are the first and third Thursday of every month. Truck load-in happens at the Local between 11:00-12:30 and truck unpacking is between 4:30-5:30. Volunteers are invited to participate in the market as well. Times are flexible and people are not expected for the whole day. This could be a great after-school opportunity for students.
Volunteer Servers / Dishwashers
Our in-person Wednesday Community Meals are starting again June 1. These provide opportunities for people to gather in a welcoming space for a free, healthy, and delicious meal. We’re looking for people to help serve and tidy up on Wednesdays. 2.5 hour volunteer time slots are flexible starting from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Must be able to carry dishes comfortably and follow instructions.
Storehouse Assistants
We’re looking for help in our storehouse during our main shipping and receiving days. Volunteers will assist with a variety of tasks including packing meals, produce boxes and helping with the receiving of our produce deliveries. Wednesdays from 9:00 – 12:30. Thursdays from 9:30 – 12:30 and 4:00 – 5:30.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs (such as a sac of potatoes)
- Be able to follow directions
- Be able to perform general math (counting, weighing and addition)
Market Cashiers
We’re looking for people to help with sales at our Community Access Market. Volunteers help weigh and ring in produce.
Fridays from 11:00 – 1:30.
- Must be reliable.
- Able to do basic math.
- Experience in retail is an asset but not necessary.
Outreach Ambassador 
Help spread the word of the Good Food movement. Volunteer once a month to help us update promotional material in the community. Volunteers will drive to various locations, restock fliers, and update community partners on latest programs.
- Flexible times.
- Must have own vehicle (The Local compensates for mileage), could be done by bike.
Garden Assistants

The first step toward joining our volunteer force is filling out the application below. There are so many ways to get involved. Letting us know your interests and availability will allow us to effectively match you with a suitable program or role. At this time, all volunteers (except drivers) must be able to provide proof of vaccination (2 doses) to volunteer for in-house programming.
